The History of Streetwear and Its Impact on Fashion

Streetwear started in the 1980s and has greatly changed over time. This article explains the history of streetwear and its impact on fashion.

Streetwear: We drop this word a lot, but have you ever wondered what it actually means? How does one word seem to encapsulate such a vast style? Below, you’ll learn more as we delve into the history of streetwear and its impact on fashion (particularly on our beloved Rockstar brand). Check it out!

What’s Streetwear?

Fashionable and casual—those are the two words you should think about when it comes to streetwear. You’ll look dope, but you’ll also feel comfortable. You may even feel sexy, but you won’t feel constricted. To some, that may put it too simply—the style has countercultures of graffiti, hip-hop, skate, and surf. Everything you know today in streetwear was once influenced by a few key players.

Shawn Stussy & Stüssy

Shawn Stussy is the owner of Stüssy, which is the company that pushed surfwear trends into the spotlight. As we mentioned, surfwear is a massive part of the streetwear trend, and Shawn Stussy was a co-founder of this style (without even knowing about it).

He started off by selling printed t-shirts with the same signature he put on his surfboards. As he grew in popularity, so did his clothing. He made casual surfwear fashionable—and there we have the start of streetwear!

James Jebbia and Supreme

The next key player in the streetwear world is the iconic Supreme. Yeah, we all know it—it’s that dope brand that everyone wants a piece of in their closet. Started by James Jebbia in the mid 1990s, his brand was all about the skateboarding and hip-hop cultures in New York, and it only boomed from there.

This brand introduction also influenced the trend we know today. Sneakers with creative tops? All comfortable? That’s just a piece of what Supreme brought to the streetwear world.

Key Streetwear Components

Comfort

As we’ve mentioned, comfort really makes streetwear the fresh thing it is today. It’s not uptight; it’s loose, free, and lets you attack the different parts of your day in bold comfort. From loose tees to strut-worthy sneakers, comfort comes first.

Self-Expression

There are no strict rules with streetwear. This key facet part of what makes the trend so hard to define—it can really depend on the brand. Here at Rockstar, you’ll see our expression in our bold colors, flashing prints, spray paint, and trendy yet flattering pieces.

Exclusivity

Another big aspect of streetwear is its exclusivity. Not everyone can own Supreme, and if you do, you feel like more of a badass than the person next to you. When you own something from Rockstar, you know you’re wearing a piece that stands out. That’s how the history of streetwear had its impact on fashion and streetwear today.

Rockstar Original

As we said, Rockstar Original has taken bits from all of the above and turned it into something badass, sexy, expressive, and bold—and we’ve put that into clothing options for any mood. We have denim sets, active sets, jackets, and anything else you’re lookin’ for. If you wanna take part in the streetwear trend, check out Rockstar’s streetwear fashion for men and women.
